The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team defeated San Antonio Keystone 48-35 Jan. 23 in District 4-3A play of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

The Lady Cobras led 11-9 after the opening stanza. But the Lady Flames struck back to take an 18-16 advantage at the break that went to 41-24 by the end of the third quarter.

“We came out and we got a little rhythm and got some steals in the press,” head coach Harvey Vaughn said. “(Sophomore guard) Selby Sanchez got hot in that quarter. I think she might have scored eight points in the quarter on a couple of lay-ups, a couple of pull-up jump shots, and on the break off of steals. She was just kind of on fire.”

Sanchez was one of five starters for the Faith because she has made the most of her opportunities, he said.

“Selby has been playing really well,” the coach said. “She’s been playing as hard as she’s been practicing. I wanted to reward her and get her out there. She probably played the best game she’s played all year for us. She played great defensively and offensively. She was a spark in the third quarter.”

The other big contributor was sophomore Layla Terrell, who led the Lady Flames with 19.

“She could have had more,” Vaughn said. “Layla really dominated the boards and was a fierce defender. She got some steals just by taking the ball from the guards and bringing it up and going to score.”

This game illustrated another part of growing in the sport for the Lady Flames.

“I think the girls are finally starting to understand they can rely on themselves to win the game,” Vaughn said. “Every game that goes by they are having to figure out how to get it done. And they’re doing it, they’re figuring it out.”

He was happy with the outcome in a contest that was played about two hours earlier than scheduled because of the bad weather.

“The girls stuck with it, and we just kept playing,” he said. “At one point we had a 17 or 18-point lead. In the fourth quarter we made some subs and they kept pressing, so they got the lead down a little bit. But overall, I thought we played well.”

Faith returns to the court Saturday, Jan. 31, when the Lady Flames host Austin San Juan Diego at 2 p.m. The program will honor its seniors.
